The Marden Fruit Show Society’s Long Term Farm Stored Competition took place prior to the organisation’s Annual General Meeting on 11th April 2017,  at the Animal Management campus, Hadlow College, Ashes Lane, Hadlow, Kent.  The fruit and results were announced during the meeting.

Growing apples profitably for today's market is a challenge. Growers must continue to enhance their knowledge in order to improve their chances for success. One of the key areas to ensure that supply and demand have parity is to continue to look at innovations in storage.

Growing fruit that stores well has been essential when new varieties become available for consumers. Growers have been working closely with industry experts over the past decade to ensure that the technology available delivers what is needed by the industry.

A total of 100 points are awarded, covering ground colour of skin, absence of shrivel or greasiness, firmness of flesh and the absence of disorders and rot.  There are four classes for apples; Gala, Bramley, Cox and Any Other Variety Dessert Apple.  The fifth class is for pears with the judging criteria changing slightly to include ripening at 18oc and exclude greasiness, which is not a trait found in that particular fruit.
